Description
The Acrobat Ant ranges in size from the smaller, solid colored brown ants to larger ants that are black and red. The Acrobat ant nests in decaying wood outdoors or in a building and will sometimes nest in an abandoned ant or termite colony. It can also nest in small spaces in building walls. When disturbed the Acrobat ant will raise its abdomen over its head and emit a foul odor to warn off attackers.
The Acrobat ant feeds on the sweet honeydew produced by plant pests such as aphids and mealy bugs and will also venture indoors in search of sweet foods.
Control Advice
Create a barrier of space between your home and your yard. Keep vegetation away from the home’s foundation and tree limbs trimmed back away from the house. Acrobat ants can gain entry through the tiniest of spaces. Once inside it is necessary to remove the nest.
Active Seasons
The Acrobat Ant is most active in fall.
