Allegheny Mound Ant

Allegheny Mound Ant

Size

1/8”-1/4”

Color

Black and brown

Description

The Allegheny Mound Ant has a brown head and midsection with a black body. The ant workers build their nest in the ground, pushing loose soil to the surface as they dig downward. The nest mound can extend three feet down and the mound will grow larger as they dig. Plants around the mounds are killed by the formic acid the ants inject into the plants. Many colonies have several queens and multiple colonies may be connected by underground tunnels.

The Allegheny Mound ant feeds on the sweet honeydew produced by aphids and eats insects for protein. Unlike the fire ant, they do not sting, but they are aggressive and will bite if their nest is attacked.

Control Advice

If pesticides are used it is important to follow the directions carefully. Wear protective clothing to avoid being bitten. If the colony is not eliminated it will recover quickly.

Active Seasons

The Allegheny Mound Ant is most active in spring and summer.
