Description
The Argentine Ant is a light to dark brown, small ant that is a highly invasive pest. Their nests are usually in shallow burrows, under vegetation or in logs. They are an invasive pest and will invade nests of insects and colonies of other ant species. New queens will leave the colony with workers to create a new colony a short distance away and the colonies will often share resources with each other, creating a larger web of tunnels and trails between multiple colonies that stretch over large spaces.
Argentine ants are partial to the honeydew produced by aphids. They will also build nests beside or under buildings and invade the building in search of food sources.
Control Advice
Create a barrier of space between your home and your yard. Keep vegetation away from the home’s foundation and tree limbs trimmed back away from the house. Ants can gain entry through the tiniest of spaces.
Active Seasons
The Argentine Ant is most active in summer and fall.
