Australian Cockroach

Australian cockroach

Size

1 1/4”

Color

Reddish brown and yellow

Description

The Australian Cockroach is reddish-brown in color, with yellow markings on the thorax and sides. It is a good flyer and will fly from trees to a dwelling in search of food. It may nest inside attics or other small spaces, hiding from view until it outgrows the nesting space.

The Australian Cockroach is attracted to homes with open garbage or pet food left outdoors and may enter the home in search of food. Despite its larger size, it is very mobile, scampering away quickly when discovered, and flattening itself to hide in the smallest of spaces.

Because it inhabits areas with garbage it can carry germs and bacteria anywhere that it touches.

Control Advice

Seal cracks in the foundation and ensure all windows and attic ventilations are covered with screens. Locate woodpiles away from the house and clear yard of leaf debris. Bring pet food in at night and cover garbage securely.

Active Seasons

The Australian Cockroach is most active in spring, summer and fall. It does not tolerate cold.
