Description
The Bald-faced Hornets are black with white markings on their faces and bodies. The queen will emerge from her winter hibernation and prepare her nest in a tree by making paper with her saliva and wood from nearby trees. As the colony grows, there will be more activity as the bald-faced hornet workers emerge in search of food.
The Bald-faced Hornet nest is usually 10-12 feet up the tree but can be higher and may go unnoticed until someone ventures too close. They are aggressive and are quick to defend their nests, usually stinging their attacker several times.
At the end of summer the colony will produce fertile queens who will hibernate through the winter. The rest of the colony will perish and the nest will be abandoned and not used again.
