Black Vine Weevil

Black Vine Weevil

Size

1/2″

Color

Dark grey to black

Description

The Black Vine Weevil is a small, dark weevil with an oval shaped body with a smaller, snout-like head with a pair of antennae. The larvae are about 5/8” long, white and crescent shaped.

There are over 100 different kinds of plants that Black Vine Weevils feed on. Because of their small size and ability to hide in soil and root balls, they are easily transported in potted plants.

Black Vine Weevils hide in the soil or under leaf debris during the day and come out at night to feed on plant leaves and roots. Females lay several eggs each day in soil near the base of plants. Larvae hatch in the soil and feed underground on the smaller plant roots.

Control Advice

Black Vine Weevil eggs and larvae thrive in moist conditions. Reduce mulch layers, water plants only when necessary, and provide adequate drainage around plants.

Active Seasons

Black Vine Weevils are most active in spring and summer.
