Description
The Carpet Beetle has an oval shaped body. The adult of the most common species has a shiny black body. Other species have various patterns of white, brown and yellow and orange. The larvae are smaller than the adults and have a dense covering of hair.
The larvae feed on fabric, animal skin and hair and can usually be found under furniture near baseboards where pet and human hair collect, or in places where clothing made with wool, fur or animal skins are stored. The adult Carpet Beetle eats flowers and if found inside your home it may be because they have come inside to lay eggs.
Control Advice
Controlling the Carpet Beetle can be difficult. Dry clean your garments and store them in air tight plastic containers. Remove their food sources with regular vacuuming to reduce pet and human hair. Dry cleaning your carpets may be helpful.
