Description
The Citronella Ant varies from an orange-yellow color to a light brown but it is the scents they emit when crushed or threatened that give the Citronella ant its name. Citronella ants are active at night and may not be detected until they swarm in spring as the queen sets off with workers to establish a new colony.
The Citronella ant colony will nest in soft soil in rotting logs, under concrete slabs or foundations but most often will be in open fields, gardens, and lawns, creating a mound above the nesting site. The colony will be located near plants with aphids and other honeydew producing pests, which they will protect. They may also nest inside, choosing rotting or over-wet wood. It is usually when they swarm that the Citronella ants come inside.
Control Advice
Avoid plants that attract aphids and other sap-sucking pests. A vacuum can be used if they swarm while inside.
Active Seasons
The Citronella Ant is most active in spring and summer.
