Description
The European Hornet is brown with yellow on its lower body and abdomen. In spring the queen emerges from hibernation and prepares her nest with paper she makes from her saliva and wood from nearby trees. The colony grows quickly and workers enlarge the nest to accommodate the growth.
European Hornet’s nests may be in trees or bushes or in spaces in buildings, or even on the side of a building, usually where there is not a lot of activity when the nest site is chosen.
The workers bring food back to the colony and defend the colony against attack. Intruders and even loud noises can cause the workers to attack. If a threat is identified, the workers will swarm out to sting the intruder and protect the nest.
Control Advice
European Hornet nests are often in hard to reach places. It is best to contact a professional beekeeper or exterminator if you have a European Hornet nest.
