Description
The Face Fly has a gray head with black strips, a gray and black body, and an orange underbelly. They prefer direct sunlight and warmth. The female lays her eggs in fresh cattle manure, where they will hatch and feed, then drop to the ground where they will emerge later as adults.
You will primarily see the Face fly on horses and cattle where they feed on moisture from eyes, nose and mouth. Although the Face fly does not bite it will feed on blood from a wound if available. It also will feed on moisture from manure. Face flies can transmit diseases, including eye worms and Pink Eye, from contact with infected horses and cattle, and bacteria and parasites encountered while laying eggs in manure.
Control Advice
Ensure all windows and attic ventilations are covered with screens. Seal cracks in interior walls that open to attics and ventilation areas if already wintering inside.

The Face Fly is most active in spring and summer but may also emerge during warm weather.
