Description
The Field Ant varies in color from black, brown, red, and even yellow, depending on the species. The Field ant workers are large and easily mistaken for carpenter ants. Some Field ants eat other insects and others prefer the honeydew produced by aphids and other plant pests. They will nest close to their food sources, often providing protection for the pests that produce honeydew.
The Field ant species will create nests by digging into soft soil, creating a mound, while others will build a nest using leaves or grass as a cover. Others will nest beside sidewalks or building foundations. Field ants do not sting but will give a painful bite to protect their nest. When disturbed some Field ants spray formic acid, which is a skin irritant and kills vegetation.
Control Advice
Clear vegetation away from the home’s foundation and trim tree limbs back from the house. Avoid plants that attract aphids and other sap-sucking pests.
