Description
The Formosan Subterranean Termite builds its colony above or below ground, in or near a wood source. An established Formosan colony can number in the millions and destroy more wood per day than any other termite known.
The Formosan Subterranean Termite is considered the most invasive termite species in the country and has invaded live trees, buildings and boats. This presents a significant threat as Formosan termites have never been exterminated from an area they have invaded.
Presently Formosan termites in the US have invaded mostly southern states, quickly moving west. They are less reported in northern states as their eggs require warmer temperatures to hatch.
Control Advice
Use wood treated to resist termites and eliminate water near structures. Once infested, treat the colony or entire building as any termites left in the structure when an underground colony is treated will set up a new colony in the wood.
Active Seasons
Formosan Subterranean Termites are active in spring and summer.
