Harvester Ant

Harvester Ant

Size

3/8”-1/2”

Color

Black to reddish brown

Description

The Harvester Ant is a larger ant and can be black, reddish brown, or brown, and is an especially aggressive ant that will bite and sting. Medical attention should be sought immediately if you experience multiple stings or have an allergic reaction to the venom.

Harvester ants build nests underground, destroying the vegetation around the nest. Depending on the species, they will nest in loose soil, creating mounds aboveground, or in deep underground tunnels dug by workers who carry the dirt away from the nest.

The Harvester ant feeds mostly on plants and seeds. The Harvester ant leaves a scent trail between the nest and food sites. When the scent dissipates the ants who cannot find their way back to the nest go off alone or in smaller groups in search of food. This can create a hazard to nearby crops and landscape plants.

Control Advice

Harvester ants avoid bait traps. Direct treatment to the mound with repeat treatments is necessary.

Active Seasons

Harvester ants are most active in spring, summer and fall.
