Description
Human Head Lice lay their eggs on the hair shaft, close to the scalp. The egg cases, called nits, are sticky and will not come off during regular hair washing but must be picked off or combed off with a very fine toothed comb.
The adult head lice crawl to another human head when the hair is brushed against it. It then lays eggs and the new head becomes infested. The head lice can survive up to 24 hours away from a food source and will often drop off on pillows, bedding, hats, and scarves and can transfer to anyone whose hair touches those items.
Control Advice
Avoid contact with anyone who you know has head lice, never share combs or brushes and avoid trying on hats. Once infected, use head lice treatment found in most pharmacies. Wash all bedding, hats and clothing in hot water. Put stuffed toys in airtight plastic bags until the lice have been cleared.
