Description
Little black ants are black and very small. A colony of little black ants will have several 1/2” queens and thousands of 1/16” workers. The colony grows quickly with each queen laying live pupa that mature in about 10 days. When the colony is too big winged ants will fly off in search of a new colony location.
Little black ants are mostly found outside and colonies can be found in spaces in dead wood or in the ground, but they will also come inside in search of sweet foods and nest in walls and under carpets.
Control Advice
Trees and shrubs that are prone to aphids and mealy bugs should be planted away from the house. Move dead wood away from the house and seal any cracks in walls. If ants are found indoors, follow the trail of ants back to their colony.
Active Seasons
The Little Black Ant is most active in winter, spring and summer.
