Description
Pharaoh Ants are very tiny light-colored ants that thrive in buildings that provide shelter, warmth, moisture and food. Pharaoh ants will nest in small wall spaces, concrete blocks, and have even been found nesting in furniture, clothing, bedding, appliances, and sheets of paper.
Pharaoh ants create scent trails between nesting sites and food sources using wiring and pipes to move throughout a building. They often invade indoor spaces near kitchens or other food sources where they favor sweet foods but will also eat insects and stored meats. They will also consume textile goods such as clothing and shoes.
A Pharaoh ant colony consists of multiple queens. New colonies are created when part of the colony breaks off in search of a new nesting site. To preserve the colony, Pharaoh ants will also separate if foraging ants are killed, breaking off into several smaller colony groups.
Control Advice
Use bait the foraging ants will take back to the nesting sites, refilling until ant activity subsides. Spray treatments are not recommended.
Active Seasons
Pharaoh ants are most active in spring, summer and fall.
