Roof Rat

Size

10”-12”

Color

Brown, black

Description

The Roof rat is usually black or brown, sometimes gray, with a 10” to 12” body, and a very long tail. They are known to prefer vegetables, seeds, and fruits but will also eat small birds and insects. They are a nuisance to farmers because they will also eat agricultural crops.

Roof rats are nimble and excellent climbers and will make nesting sites on the ground and in trees. They will gain entry to a dwelling usually for warmth or nesting, and will choose spaces in the tops of buildings if possible. The Roof rat will breed year round if conditions are suitable.

Roof rats also carry and transmit diseases, some incurable, to humans.

Control Advice

Trim tree limbs back away from the house. Packrats are excellent climbers. If setting traps put them on the roof. Seal openings to your home, use airtight containers when storing fabrics in basements, garages or attics.

Active Seasons

The Roof rat is most active in winter, spring and fall.
