Springtail

Springtail

Size

1/16”

Color

Gray or black

Description

Springtails are tiny grey to black insects that live in very wet soil and feed on fungus and molds. It gets its name from its ability to leap when disturbed, using its long tail like appendage to propel it out of the way of potential predators. Because of its small size it may be mistaken for the common flea. It is a nuisance but harmless to humans and pets.

Springtails are very prolific and can usually be found in large numbers under landscaping rocks or stones, potted plants, or other places where water accumulates. They can tolerate cold and have even been seen in large numbers on the top of snow. If indoors, Springtails will be living in wet basements, near water leaks or other standing water.

Control Advice

Reduce mulch layers, water plants only when necessary, and provide adequate drainage around plants. Reduce or eliminate plants that require overwatering next to the home. Water features should have adequate drainage to prevent standing water.
