Description
Tarantulas are the largest spider with a body length of about 1 1/2″ to 2 1/2″, plus long their legs. Their bodies are light to dark brown and have body hair that causes irritation to skin and eyes.
Tarantulas live in burrows in the ground, under rocks or logs, or under tree bark. It will spin webbing inside, with strands leading out the burrow entrance to alert it to potential prey outside. Normally the Tarantula will stay in or very close to its burrow, coming out only at night or to catch prey that gets too close. However, during mating season males may venture out in search of females.
Tarantulas are not aggressive spiders, but will attack if provoked, raising up on their back legs to threaten their attacker. A tarantula bite may be painful to humans but rarely causes severe reactions. Guide a wandering Tarantula into a container and relocate it away from your home.
Control Advice
Move vegetation and garden timbers away from house, close doors to discourage wandering males.
