White-footed Ant

Size

1/8”

Color

Black and white

Description

The White-footed Ant is a tiny black ant with yellowish-white on the bottom half of its legs. The White-footed ant was first discovered in Florida in 1986 and is still being studied. It was introduced to the United States in imported plants and is expected to spread with the transport of infested landscaping supplies and plants.

Colonies of the White-footed ant consist of multiple queens and thousands of workers. Nests are usually in shallow spaces, potted plants, under loose leaves, or wood piles. Indoors they will nest in wall spaces and other small spaces, even under carpet.

White-footed ants feed on plant nectar and honeydew produced aphids and other plant pests. They will protect the aphids from predators, leaving plants vulnerable to disease and destruction.

Control Advice

Studies are still being done to determine methods of control. Inspect new plants for nests. Seal outside cracks to home and keep tree limbs trimmed back from the house.

Active Seasons

White-footed ants are most active in spring, summer and fall.
